This is a well researched work in two volumes that covers the beginnings of the early British regiments under trading companies up through full participation in the World Wars. The Central Africa Regiment, Uganda Rifles, and East Africa Rifles of the 1890's became the King's African Rifles which fought in German East Africa in World War I. Many small expeditions are covered, especially against the Mad Mullah in Somaliland. World War II saw outstanding services rendered in Abyssinia, Madagascar, and Burma. Appendices cover uniforms, medals, and statistics.

Peers, who would later rise to the rank of Lieutenant General, was commander of Detachment 101 from December, 1943 to July 1945, and before that, the Operations and Training Officer. Dean Brelis, who later became a novelist and foreign correspondent with Time magazine, was at the time a field agent, first as a sergeant and then as a lieutenant, during 1944 and 1945. Although the story of 101's guerrilla operations is seen in this book through the eyes of the commanding officer, the actual text is the result of collaboration between the two men, who hoped it embodied not only the difficult command problems of a complex guerrilla operation, but the experiences and accomplishments of the men in the field as well.
