The history of medicine tells us that postmortem dissection of human tissues was
practiced by the Arabians as early as the 11th century. Muslim physicians, in
particular, have been noted for their pioneering work. However, the main focus of
this work was mostly to learn about anatomy. The 19th century brought a new
page in the history of pathology. Indeed, work of Carl Rokitansky (1804–1878),
Rudolf Virchow (1821–1902), and Julius Cohnheim (1839–1884) among others
introduced pathology as we know it today—to correlate symptoms and clinical
manifestations with tissue alterations. Virchow took this a step further by adapting
the microscope to uncover tissue alterations at the cellular level. This really
opened the door to modern pathology and to a medical discipline that gives the
clinicians ultimate direction for diagnosis and therapeutic approaches.
