It was natural that a great deal of Chinese art found its way to Japan. However, it is a little surprising that this art is, on the one hand, of such high quality, and on the other hand, so little known to the West. But the truth is that some of the finest Chinese art—sculpture, bronzes, and jades—has long resided in Japan and that much of it is unknown outside Japan. Many pieces, because they are in private collections, have never been shown publicly even within Japan.
