It is through the eyes of the artist Canaletto that most Englishmen receive their first impression of Venice. Though he was painting some 250 years ago, the city he knew already had its air of 'magnificent decay'. Venice was an essential stop on the Grand Tour and Canaletto found a ready market for his topographical paintings among the travelers. His most important patron was the English Consul in Venice, Joseph Smith, and it was Smith's collection that eventually became the pride of the British Royal Collection.
